Ex POW Designs Capital!
And Does One Hell
Of A Poor Job!

Well before the more famous Marquis de Lafeyette
came from France to fight for America, Washington D.C.'s
designer Pierre L'Enfant was in combat w/ the rebels.

He was seriously wounded, captured, and then
given back to the Americans in a POW exchange.

Later, as a city designer he was destined
to doom Washington D.C.'s occupants
to being enslaved by the automobile.

A Victim Of The Times

He designed the city shortly before
new construction materials and methods,
raised the height buildings could be made to.

Second, he designed the city to utilize the prevalent
form of transport used at the time, the horse.

Horses use roads that required large amounts
of land and spread the city out.

So do cars. This made it too easy for future decisions to
favor the cars that could utilize the existing road system.

He also was more concerned w/ the artistic side
of design, as opposed to the functional side.

This was to be a city of beautiful buildings and vast parks.

There was no need to worry about air pollution or Saddam Hussien.

Washington D.C. was to be competitive w/
the massive French city of Versailles.

Unfortunately, L'Enfant's original flawed plan has been steadfastly
adhered to by successive local and federal politicians.

It suffers from a severe case of Urban Sprawl.

Erach day the average citizen walks, works,
spends $$$ and sweats to overcome the city's vast area.

Define Irony

The ex POW's design also makes us more dependent
on oil, which has left thousands of U.S. soldiers dead,
wounded, captured or missing since W.W.II.

The medal that represents the Military Order of the
Purple Heart, given to U.S. soldiers killed or wounded
in combat zones, was designed by L'Enfant.
