It's name was chosen in a competition between
American school children by act of Congress.

Public and private schools in the U.S. and it's territories
that DOD overseas, dependent schools and BIA
schools were allowed into the competition.

6,100 teams represented  71,650 kids.

NASA decided the winner and
the name was announced in 1989.

Named for Capt. Cook's sailing ship.

31 of 111 state winners chose the name.

English spelling of the word endeavor was used.

It and the rest of the fleet feature improved safety, including;

- Drag-chute system for stooping during landing.

- New tires, brakes and nose gear steering system.

- Low altitude escape module.

51 rocket engines are used by each space shuttle.

-2 solid rocket boosters
- 3 orbiter main rockets
- 2 orbital maneuvering system rockets
- 38 primary reaction control system rockets
- 6 vernier (fine control) reaction control system rockets
