Next Generation
Space Telescope

Project Initiation Date:
2003

Launch Date:
2008

Contractors:
Undetermined

Distance Of Vision:
12 billion light yrs.

Mirror Diameter:
8 m (flexible)

Expected Redshift View:
10 to 20

Light Detected:
Far visible to mid-infrared.

Mission Life:
10 yrs.

Launch Vehicle:
Expendable rocket

A giant sun screen will be deployed to keep the cameras
as cold as possible so heat does not distort the images.

It will gather 10 times more light than Hubble.

It will be located further from earth to reduce
contamination from sunlight reflected off it's surface.

Location will be at the L2 Lagrang point, one of 5
orbits where the Earth and sun's gravity are in equilibrium.

Mission

It's main job will be to see inside massive clouds
of space dust, where stars and planets form.

The clouds do not absorb infrared light, and it
will also probably give new insight on dark matter.
