This is an enhanced photo of Asteroid Mathilde taken by the Near Earth Asteroid
Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft on Friday, June 27, 1997 on a 25-minute flyby.
The asteroid is so battered by collisions with outer space rocks that it is almost "all crater"
with one pit big enough
to swallow the District of Columbia and some of its suburbs.
Recent research suggests that it may be more difficult than imagined to
someday blast an asteroid like Mathilde off a collision course with Earth.
