Al Gore's Iridium Fiasco

$7 billion of the earth's natural resources wasted on a
cell-phone system made by a U.S. defense contractor
who transferred weapons to China.

Announced w/ great fanfare in 1990.

Originally planned as a network of 77 satellites
to link cell phone users around the world.

It was scaled back to 66 satellites.

The phone itself costs $3,000 and is bulky compared to others.

They have also proven difficult to manufacture.

10,300 of the phones had been sold by May, 1999.
That's 90,000 short of the goal.

Lack of an adequate distribution source
and sales personnel, has hindered it's growth.

The network is 19% owned by our China-lovin' buddies at Motorola.

It's main customers are govt.'s, oil companies, and 'news'
organizations that send people to remote parts of the globe.

The main proponent of the massive waste of $$$
is the allegedly "pro-environment" Al Gore.

China would love to use them to coordinate any future attack on Taiwan.
