Architect Eugene Tsui plans
to jump-start the chronically ailing African
economy by building a 9-mile-long
bridge that spans the
Strait
of
Gibraltar.
"The structure of the bridge is a series of fish-shaped sections, like
the vertebrae of a spinal column,"
Tsui tells
POPULAR MECHANICS. Constructing the 24-lane road and rail
bridge would cost $10 billion.
To make the price more palatable, Tsui's
design includes an income-generating convention center built atop
an
artificial island constructed in midspan. For
power, winds and currents would be tapped by 150 turbines.
The Oakland-based
design firm has built a 24-ft. model for a presentation before the King of
Morocco.
