Three more arrested for deadly China gas blow-out

BEIJING (AFP) - Three more people have been arrested in connection with a gas explosion in southwestern China last month that killed 243 people, taking the number being held to six, state media reported.

Chuandong (East Sichuan) Drilling Company deputy manager Wu Hua, the head of the company's No.12 oil drilling team, Wu Bin, and Xiao Xiansu, a worker at the No.16 natural gas well, were arrested Thursday, the Xinhua news agency said.
Last week engineer Wang Jiandong and two other workers were arrested over the blow-out in the Chuandongbei gas field which poisoned some 9,000 villagers and led to the evacuation of nearly 60,000 as deadly sulfurated hydrogen spewed from the well for days.

Workers drilling at the field made nearly every mistake in the book, leading to the disaster, state TV reported this month, citing an inspection taskforce.

The drill workers not only caused the blow-out, but subsequently failed to prevent the gas leak or raise a timely alarm with local officials in nearby villages, official media has said.
State-run oil giant China National Petroleum Corp, operator of the gasfield and parent of listed PetroChina, has so far forked over some 33 million yuan (3.9 million dollars) in compensation to the victims.
