In the East, Turks retook Antioch (present day Turkey).
1270
Louis IX was looking for revenge over the Turks,
after he paid his way out of Turkish captivity.
He decided to avoid the well defended route through
present-day Lebanon , and landed a force in Tunisia.
The effort fell apart after he fell ill and died at Carthage.
1291
Last Christian stronghold in Syria,
Acre (now Akko) falls to Moslems.
As the Vatican's power waned, Europe
turned away from the Holy Land.
All eyes turned toward the effort
to find an ocean route to Asia.
The area of what is now the former Yugoslavia
is inhabited w/ both Moslems and Christians.
It has been the site of a centuries long
struggle between the to religions.
