Third Crusade
1189 to 1192 In 1187 the Moslems retook Jerusalem
and most of the area around it under Saladin.
Tyre, Tripolis, and Antioch held out.
The Europeans massed for another crusade.
One of it's leaders German Emperor Fredrick I
(A.K.A. Barbarossa) died before he and
his men got to present day Turkey.
Christian infighting ensues.
After the arrival in the Holy Land, King Philip II
(A.K.A. Philip Augustus) of France said
he was ill and went back to Europe.
After returning home, he began to plot against
King Richard I of England, who had remained
in the Holy Land where he fought many battles.
Richard I defeated Saladin and retook the area
north of Jerusalem, but could not retake the city.
He did manage to get the Moslems to agree
to allow Christians pilgrims into the city.
