"A Few Good Men"

You've probably heard of the Hollywood movie about the hazing of
a U.S. marine at Guantanamo Bay, Naval Base, Cuba in 1986.

It starred Tom Cruise, Jack  Nicholson and Demi Moore.

Based on a "Code Red" hazing ritual against Pfc. William Alvarado.
He started the scandal when he wrote his Senator about
being hospitalized after being hazed by fellow Marines.

Pfc. David Cox of Needham Mass and several
others were charged and faced a 20 yr. jail sentence.

Chris Valdez recounted an implied order to
conduct the hazing, from their commanding "colonel",
 on the prime time show Unsolved Mysteries.

July 1986
Alvarado was blindfolded and gagged while sleeping.

Dragged out of bed, his head was shaved.
The he stopped struggling, so Cox stops the hazing.
The gag removed and Alvarado was found to be unconscious.
He was hospitalized and eventually recovered.

Don Marcari represented accused.
Cox claimed orders were implied by the "colonel."

Colonel denies order. Marcari advised Cox to take a plea bargain.
Cox fights.

Eventually he is convicted of simple assault, receives a sentence
of time served and eventually gets an honorable discharge.

6 yrs later, the movie comes out.

Cox's girlfriend, Elaine Tinsley, recounted his anger about theft of story.

Cox and other filed a lawsuit.

Cox speaks on radio talk shows.
He mentions how the "colonel" was trying
to provoke confrontations w/ Cuba.
His mother warned him not to.

Jan. 1994
Cox lives w/ girl and is looking for permanent work at a local UPS.

He stays home expecting to hear about job.
"Jim" at UPS leaves phone message of "good news."

Elaine checks messages from her work place
and is alarmed that message not taken.

When she arrives home she finds their  pet rabbit was left out.
"Jim" left multiple, unanswered messages.

Cox's truck w/ keys in ignition, 9mm pistol
and un-cashed check were left home.
USMC jacket was missing. He didn't normally wear it.
Bank account was not emptied.

4/2/94
A hunter finds Cox's body near the Charles River 5 miles away.

Cox was shot 4 times.
Once in the back of the neck. 3 times in the torso.

Cash and credit cards not removed from wallet.

Local police believe he knew killers.
Body was almost 1 mile into woods.
Shots would not have raised alarm as
location was between 2 firing ranges.

Cox was wearing his USMC jacket 

Brother says he thinks he was killed as part of the UPS thefts.

Cox told him the supervisor and a driver were stealing.
Police found no evidence of thefts.
