Japan ordered four 767 AWACS in 1993 and 1994 for delivery by 1999.
Why?
Because they are terrified of China.
That's why Boeing is so big on trade w/ China.
It forces other countries to buy their military weapons.
Japan's New Boeing 767 AWACS Will Be Expected To Detect
Cruise Missiles Boeing Is Selling To The Chinese.
Boeing's production of the 707 airframe ended in May 1991.
Boeing announced in Dec. of 1991 that it would use a modified 767 commercial
jetliner as the new platform for the system. Because of its wider body, the
767 offers 50% more floor space and nearly twice the volume of the 707.
It has two-person flight crew and twin engines.
The 767 AWACS is produced at the company's plant in
Everett, Wash., with modifications done in Wichita, Kan.
Painting and testing are done in Seattle.
