This 1861 photo supplied by the New-York Historical Society titled Colored Orphan Asylum is part of the New-York Historical Society's new exhibit, 'New York Divided: Slavery and the Civil War,' which opens 11/17/06. The exhibit explores how slavery, while outlawed in New York state in 1827, continued to be an incredibly divisive issue, pitting the economic powerhouse of New York City's connection to the cotton trade against the moral outrage of the communities of whites and free blacks disgusted by the institution.
