AK-100 Series

Most modern small arms systems adopted by the
Russian Armed Forces were engineered in Izhevsk,
located 1,130 km east of Moscow in the Urals.

AK-47, AKM, AK-74, AK-74M, Makarov pistols, SVD and
Dragunov rifles are some of the city's most famous examples.

It's Kalashnikov AK-100 series rifles come in 3 calibres:

- 7.62 x 39 mm
- 5.45 x 39 mm
- 5.56 x 45 mm NATO

The"100" is the coded designation of the
Izhmash Armory - Production No. 100.

Adding a # to hte  initial 100, designates a modification
(AK-101, AK-102, AK-103, AK-104  AK-105.)

  The 1st was the AK-74M.

Izhmash produces all submachine guns with folding stocks -
the feature which differs AK-74M from AK-74.

The short, folding stock AKS74U
(avtomat Kalashnikova skladnoy ukorochenniy, model 1974)
is manufactured by the Tula Arsenal but was designed
by the Kalashnikov Arms Design Bureau in Izhevsk.

This rifle is mainly used by the Russian police.

AK-74M, AK-101 and AK-103 feature
barrels of standard length of 415 mm.

AK-102, AK-104 and AK-105 have 314 mm-long barrels.

All have a black phosphate finish and  folding,
black, fiberglass-reinforced polyamide stock.

MARKET EXPANSION

The AK-100 series is a major effort by IZHMASH
to regain and expand its International markets.

When the 5.45 x 39 mm weapons were introduced,
they were not as popular as expected.

The older AK-47 varients were more than capable,
and millions of their 7.62 by 39mm ammo was on hand.

The new ammo was unproven, as was the rifle.

Exports shrank.

To get the market back IZHMASH decided to
make the rifles in 3 calibers: 5.45, 7.62 and 5.56 mm.

The   5.56 x 45 mm type was created exclusively for export.

The NATO round-using AK-101 and AK-102
are considered better than 5.45 x 39 mm.

The NATO 5.56 round mm is by 6 mm longer
giving 20 % greater power.

Cartridge components including propellant,
primer and projectile are apparently better.

The NATO-style round ia also apparently more accurate,
as much as 23 % higher than the AK74M.
