Outrage
3/23/99
Outrage ensued as a white farmer received a
suspended sentence for killing a black baby.A white judge issued the ruling, and Nich Steyn
left court in an armored car for his own protection. And angry mob shouted "kill the Boar!"
Soldiers used clubs and assault rifles to restrain the mobThe action occurred in Delmas near Johannesburg.
6-month-old Angelina Zwane was killed
by a bullet fired by Steyn, last April 1998.Steyn,42, was convicted last March,
of culpable homicide and assault. He had fired shots at 3 black children as they crossed a field.
One was holding Angeline. The bullet that killed her, then lodged in
the back of cousin Francina Dlamini, 11.Justice Minister Dullah Omar expressed "shock" when
Magistrate Tjibbe Spoelstra issued the 5 yr. suspended sentence.Omar has ordered the court to produce a report on the case.
It will rely heavily on the forensic witness, who
claimed the bullet ricocheted off a telephone pole.(He should have went to jail for gross stupidity.)
The child's family is expected to appeal the sentence
and the local ANC will probably file a civil suit.
