1460 Portuguese land at Sierra Leone 1472 Fernando Poo (Port) lands at Benin. 1474 Portuguese land at St. Catherine. 1482 Portugese discover mouth of the Congo River. 1486 Portuguese establish post at Walvis Bay. 1488 Portuguese land at Cape of Good Hope. 1770 Lake Tana discovered by Bruce. 1805 Operating from Timbuktu, Mungo Park explores most of Niger River. 1822-23 Denham, Clapperton and Oudney cross Sahara, from Tripoli, Libya to Lake Chad. 1828 Rene Caillie becomesn first European to travel across Sahara from Fez to Timbuktu and back. 1830 John and Richard Lander find mouth of Niger River. 1848 Mt. Kilimanjaro discovered by Rebmann. 1852 Livingston begins 4 yr. trek across Southern Africa. 1855 Livingston discovers Victoria Falls on upper Zambezi River. 1856 Livingston ends trek at Quelimane at mouth of Zambezi. Livingston | Speke 1858 Speke finds Lake Victoria. Speke and Burtan find Lake Tanganyika. 1864 Lake Albert discovered by Baker. 1871 Stanley finds Livingston at Ujiji. 1876-77 Stanley traces Congo River from interior to it's mouth. 1888 Teleki and von Hohnel discover Lake Rudolf.
